It’s the furry, four-legged friends that are getting the headline today because I’ve realized that when you know something about a person’s pets, you feel like you know the person better. I’m all about connection with people, so if you have a dog or cat or bunny or even an iguana, I want you to post a comment with a link to your blog or Facebook page or Flickr account or wherever we can see a favorite or funny pic or two of your pets.
Show us your pets!
Animals are also always so good at getting us to forget the trivial stuff (board meetings, budgets, bosses, etc.) and reminding us of what’s important (and/or demanding food. Now.) I call them “therapy in a small package.” Unless you have a Great Dane.
I’m posting two photos of my eight-year-old pug, Yolanda. We brought her home as a two year old, and she came to us with a pacifier habit. Yes, we’ve exaggerated the ridiculousness of it by purchasing “special” binkys for her over the years, but what are you going to do with a dog as funny looking as a pug except make it look funnier? Here are two of my faves, and No Hablo and Big Teeth.
Now it’s your turn.
And have a great week!
Belinda Pollard says
Haha, that funny teeth one is kind of alarming. But she has such very sweet eyes above it!
You’re right, it’s very humanising to “meet” people’s pets. I had a meeting with a client the other week, and we spent 5 or 10 minutes talking about his troubles with his dog. Makes people seem so much more approachable, somehow.
You’ve already seen my blog post about my puppy Rufus’s frisbee dancing, so I’ll include a link to my Senior Terrier Killarney’s resentment of the Cone of Shame. (She’s an absolute whiz at suture removal, post surgery…)

Give Yolanda a tummy rub from me. 🙂
Laura Zera says
Ohhhh, his eyes say it all! And does he know you tell people he’s a senior?! My dad used to call those cones party hats.
Yolanda LOVES tummy rubs, I will definitely pass one on for you.
Belinda Pollard says
Killarney doesn’t know what I tell anyone, including her. She is 15 and deaf as a housebrick. I try not to take shameful advantage of this. 😉
Laura Zera says
That’s a grand old age for a pooch!

Here are mine…these creatures make my day, every day! http://thelastkrystallos.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/for-love-of-our-furry-friends.html

Such great fur babies, Lisa! And your kids are pretty cute, too. LOL! That quote from Jo Cannon really struck me — it’s such a testament to the power of pets. I know my first pug, Ozwald, pulled me through a bad relationship break-up in the 90s and he was pretty much the one thing that kept me going for that first month.
Lisa Shambrook says
They really can give you reasons for living when life’s bad…thanks for the inspiration with this post!

Fun idea, Laura – and I love that you’ve given your little dog such a beautiful name to grow into!
You already know about Dorothy Purrkins, my cat (in the UK, there’s a women’s fashion store called Dorothy Perkins); the tale of her arrival is here: http://youngbyname.me/2013/01/26/enter-the-snow-cat/
Dorothy is the latest in a long line of pussycats in this household, all special in their way. My daughter’s first word was “Cat” and her first painting was of a black cat. which you can see here: http://youngbyname.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/2012916213818-e1347828820440.jpg?w=300&h=204
However, her first pets were guinea pigs named Brownie (when she was a Brownie herself) and Ginger (no prizes for guessing which colour he was).
She clamoured for a dog when they died, but when we refused, she came up with an ingenious alternative that is easy to care for, doesn’t incur huge vet bills, makes no mess and doesn’t smell. We said she could have as many of these as she liked. Curious to know what it is? Read this post for the answer, and I’m sure you’ll be wanting one too: http://youngbyname.me/2012/09/16/in-search-of-the-perfect-pet/
Laura Zera says
Hallo, Debbie! Pugs are a species that demand unusual names. We also call her Yoyo a lot. 😛
I love guinea pigs, too, and sort of had some when I lived with my sister and her husband (and they had them). They just don’t live long, unfortunately. When I first read about Dorothy Purrkins I went and Googled what I guess was the original spelling, thinking that she must be a famous politician or author and that I was clueless for not knowing of her. Imagine my relief when I found the clothing company, LOL! And as much as your Laura was being a trooper with the invisible dog idea, I’m really so glad that Dorothy came into your lives!

Just realized I’ve made memes for all three of my fur-children. I’ve written posts on my former dog Speckles as well as one about Luka. One of these days, I’ll do one on Troxel and Zoey too.

Troxel: http://on.fb.me/1aGW37I
Zoey: http://on.fb.me/15FYaWm
Laura Zera says
Love them! And what kind of dog is Zoey? She looks like she’s one of the ‘smart’ breeds, the ones who actually listen to you and stuff.
Jagoda says
Such a fun post and what an adorable pug! Love that ‘big teeth’ binky–such a juxtaposition on your cutie.
Okay, so now I will have to write a post about my two cats and the much-missed black lab, Bella, with pix and all. I already know how I’ll tie it in with the conflict topic I usually write about.
…and now I’m going to go look at some of the other pet pics from the comments.
BTW: love your new WP theme–very cool.
Laura Zera says
Great that you’ve even got a tie-in for your own theme! Can’t wait to ‘meet’ your cats and I totally understand about furry family members being missed. I still shed tears now and again for my first pug, Ozwald. Thanks for the feedback on the new look of my site, too, Jagoda!

I have to say that you need to click on CATS in the topics area to see a couple of shots in the posts of my beloved and WILD marmalade moggy. Couldn’t live without him, even though he costs me a fortune in food and litter. He is named sort of after my husband – ‘lui’ means ‘he’ or ‘him’, both in French and Italian, but it’s the latter that’s pronounced like ‘Louis’. Cats don’t take good funny pic.s, by and large – just beautiful ones. 🙂
Laura Zera says
Hi Margaret, so nice to “meet” you, and thanks for stopping by. I found Lui on your website (http://www.andthenlikemydreams.com/mrsmrsblog/cats/) and he is a gorgeous feline, for sure. I’m a cat lover, too, and have an Oriental Shorthair named Sushi (but that will be for another post).
Congratulations on your upcoming book launch! It looks like a great story and I’ve added it to my Goodreads list. I’m working on a memoir right now, actually. I *think* it’s in its final edit…
Jodi from Heal Now and Forever says
I have chickens. You can see them here! Love your little doggie! <3 http://healnowandforever.net/2013/06/03/what-do-you-love/
Laura Zera says
You have chickens and so much more! Although I guess only the chickens are officially “yours.”
Kris says
I wanted to post a pic of BRUNO THE BUNNY but I’m a dork and can’t figure out how to post his pic. But you know what he looks like. 🙂
Laura Zera says
You can’t post pictures *to* my website, you can only post links to somewhere else where a public photo of Bruno exists. And Bruno is such a beautiful boy, there *should* be public photos of him out in the world. 🙂

Laura,
Lillie is now two and she’s getting waaay to frisky! This sexy shot shows it all!

Hope Sushi is feeling better!
Laura Zera says
Two already?!?! That song by Right Said Fred came into my head — “I’m too sexy for my (shirt)fur, too sexy for my fur…”
Sushi’s doing better, thanks. Just had her for a vet recheck, x-rays, etc. Her asthma is looking better.
