The international volunteer program on Israeli kibbutzim has pretty much gone away, but like Jerry Seinfeld and Sacha Baron Cohen, I was lucky enough to experience it in its heyday. I invite you to join me in a hop over to Molly Greene’s blog today to read how it turned out to be a life-changing experience. As one of 80+ volunteers on Givat Haim Ihud–some Jewish, most of us not–I was part of a crazy, eclectic mix (and a few lost souls), there to work, learn, travel, party and get up to a variety of shenanigans…sometimes frowned upon by the more serious Israelis…
A big thank you to Molly Greene for hosting me (again) on her most awesome blog. The countdown is on for the release of her new novel, Mark of the Loon, due out in mid-May.

Read it yesterday on molly’s blog! I found it so heartening hearing about your surrogate mother!

Hi Jodi! Yes, she is truly a wonderful lady. I am SO overdue for a visit. I was last there in 1993 but hope to go back and see her soon.

Oh my gosh, these pictures made me laugh! Laura, you are a character and I love you for it. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences on my blog this week. I hope it’s the 2nd of many, many visits!
Laura Zera says
Aw, thanks again for having me, Molly. It’s always a pleasure to collaborate with you and you’ve got such great readers. And yes, we had a fine time with the pranks that year. I’m top right in both of those photos (cue evil laugh…).

I just read the article on Molly Greene’s blog but I came back here to laugh again at those pictures = did anyone do that to you?
Laura Zera says
Hi Ellis, somehow I escaped the water-dumping welcome photo tradition but had a few other jokes played on me while there!
