Sometimes it’s easier than you think to get away from the crowds. While most vacationers stick to the islands in Belize’s Ambergris or Central group, head a little further south and an absolute jewel awaits you. Tiny Tobacco Caye is just 30 minutes by boat from the coastal town of Dangriga, and yet to visit it feels like you’ve landed somewhere completely off the charts.
Escape!
If you’re seeking luxury, then this isn’t the place for you. But if you want to stay on an island that has only 20 permanent residents and not many more guests, fall asleep to the sound of water lapping up against the stilts that hold up your cabin, and never, ever have to wear your shoes, EVER, then you might be on to something.
Tobacco Caye sits right atop the Belize Barrier Reef so it offers snorkeling directly from the beach. You can also go fishing. Or you can lie in a hammock and read. (Or sit in a chair and read.) Really, that’s about it. I said “Gilligan’s Island,” didn’t I?
My visit to Central America in early 2011 is actually what prompted me to start my very first blog, less than two years ago. This is the post I wrote about my stay on Tobacco Caye For more details on lodging options, here’s the link to Moon Travel Guides’ Tobacco Caye piece. And just to round out the info, Wiki Travel also has a Tobacco Caye page.
One final consideration to keep in mind: from the U.S., it only takes 35,000 air reward miles to get to Belize (or 17,500 should you decide you don’t want to come home.)

I need to sit on a chair and read right now! Stirring lots of pots and don’t want to burn any so I can’t at the moment!

Well, good thing you didn’t try because apparently one of my links was broken anyway. Fixed now, though. What are you cooking?!
Otga says
Seems very interesting Laura, I think you and I have a simular taste of holiday ( get away from the crowds)!!!!!
Laura Zera says
Thanks, Otga. You have many nice little islands near you that would be good for that, too!
Otga says
I know, but I haven’t found out the one. When I do definitely let you know.

You are fortunate that you have traveled so much and you have the whole world to write about! Sounds just about perfect!
Laura Zera says
I feel very fortunate, indeed, Mary. Just hope my legs hold out because there are still lots of places to go!

Sweet! It’s always good to know about places that take relatively few air points to get there. I can’t say I’ve ever taken a “leisurely” vacation. Hmm, must add “visit paradise” to my bucket list.
Laura Zera says
So you tend toward the ‘active’ vacations, huh? Those are great, too, except that sometimes, a good flop-out is just what the body needs.

Tobacco Caye is one of the best isolated Islands in Belize. Although I have never been, I have been told by my best friends that it is a great island to relax and unwind.
Laura Zera says
Absolutely! You can’t *not* relax there. Thanks for stopping by, James.
